Anonymous asked: I hope you dont mind me asking but do you think having an online store/taking commissions/otherwise making money from art would be something you could put into a resume or college/uni application? Ive been told that if you can phrase it well, it helps but on the other hand people ive asked also say that doing the "anime arts" will actually make them reject you? Ahhhh i dunno!! But thank you for taking the time to read this!

genicecream:

you just have to phrase it well i think! maybe you can try leaving out the “anime” part and just say things like you “run your own online store selling art” or “make commissioned art” or something to sound more professional? (just talk about it like any other job!)

protip tho the advantage of having an internet clientele is you can say something fancy like you “provide services to clients from all over the world” or you “sell merchandise internationally” because if your commissions/merch are available internationally that technically /is/ what you are doing lol

i think writing good resumes and applications really comes down to how well you can phrase things! if you’re not really confident about your writing you can try asking a friend you trust for help

Anonymous asked: Do you have any advice on balancing drawing what you love verses doing art studies on art fundamentals? Sometime studying art fundamental will take me out of drawing for a while. It wasn't until recently I started drawing what I love and getting back into drawing again. But I still want to improve my technical skills

genicecream:

i try to balance between the two by drawing the things i like to study a fundamental, or studying a fundamental while drawing something i like!

basically, rather than completely separating the two, if i’m trying to get better at something i’ll put a focus on it when i work on pieces for myself, or directly relate a study i’m doing to a piece i’m making

eg. in this voltron fanart i wanted to have a convertible in the composition, so i spent some time in my sketchbook doing rough sketches of retro-looking cars to get a feel of what details i needed to include, and how things looked in different perspectives. around this time i also wanted to get better at rendering different materials, so when i looked at my references as i painted the car, i paid a lot of attention to how light, shadows, and reflections appear differently on different surfaces, and how i could translate those observations into what i paint.

genicecream:

a series of composition tips i’d been sharing on twitter!

and since some people had asked, i’ve put up a pdf version of this on gumroad along with a layered psd of one of the example images too

tips would be really appreciated, but it’s up for free!
